What a dumpster price usually includes

A posted price is for one dumpster kept for a set number of days, with a set weight of debris included. Those two terms differ from company to company, which is why a low price is not always the cheaper rental.

Rental days

115 of the 170 prices that state a rental length include 7 days. 26 prices do not say.

What raises a dumpster bill

  • Weight over the tons included33 of the 61 companies that post prices state a charge per extra ton: $50 to $200 a ton, with a middle of $80 a ton. The rest do not post one; ask before you book.
  • Keeping it longer23 of the 61 companies that post prices state a charge for extra days, from $10 to $100 a day. Most others say only how many days are included.
  • Starting prices22 of the 61 companies that post prices call some or all of them starting prices ("starting at", "as low as"), so a quote for your address and debris can come in higher.
  • The kind of debris22 posted prices are for one kind of debris only, such as household trash. Ask before you load heavy material like concrete, dirt or roofing; some companies need a different dumpster or charge more for it.
  • Delivery, distance and timingSome companies add a delivery fee, a travel fee outside their area or a rush fee. Each company page says when the company's own pages mention one.

Dumpster sizes

Which dumpster size you need

A dumpster's size is how many cubic yards it holds. Pick the size by the job, then check the weight: each price includes a set number of tons, and heavy debris reaches it long before the dumpster looks full. If you are between two sizes, compare the larger size's price and tons included before you book.

Companies also post 4, 5, 6, 6.5, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17, 18, 21 and 25 yard dumpsters. Each company page lists every size it posts.

How these figures are worked out

Each figure comes from 196 posted prices, each the company's own, with the date we saw it. Size figures count only prices for exactly that size. The middle is the median. No price is adjusted for the days or tons it includes, so read the terms beside it. Prices older than 90 days show their age. How we check
